Culvertons has dated these Iron Bound Pine Chests to the 1900s.
Dawn House was built in 1907 and designed by Ernest Newton RA, a leading Arts & Crafts architect. When I first saw these chests, and based on the numbering to each lid, their would have been originally at least four, I thought they would work very well as lamp tables either side of a large sofa, with plenty of room left over for books and the odd bottle of wine. They are in original untouched condition; even their fabric lined interior is still intact. I have always been drawn to furniture that has a traceable past and Jessie's travelling chests come with their original hanging label stating who they belonged to and where they were being sent - Ms. Cowie of Agglestone Road in Studland, near Swanage.
