Pair Of Antique Bound Pine Chests (belonged To Jessie Degan Cole Of Dawn House, Sleepers Hill In Winchester)

£475    $644    €560
This decorative pair of bound pine chests (Circa 1900) used to belong to Jessie Degan Cole. At the time of the 1911 census, Jessie lived in Dawn House (see image), which is located on Sleepers Hill in Winchester. Dawn House was built in 1907 and designed by Ernest Newton RA, a leading Arts & Crafts architect. When I first saw these chests, and based on the numbering to each lid, their would have been originally at least four, I thought they would work very well as lamp tables either side of a large sofa, with plenty of room left over for books and the odd bottle of wine. They are in original untouched condition; even their fabric lined interior is still intact. I have always been drawn to furniture that has a traceable past and Jessie''s travelling chests come with their original hanging label stating who they belonged to and where they were being sent - Ms. Cowie of Agglestone Road in Studland, near Swanage.
