This monumental nineteenth century Venetian Baroque style hanging lantern is constructed from giltwood with clear glass panels and finished in gold leaf. The structure is profusely carved with acanthus leaf scrolls, shellwork, swags, and term figures, featuring a colonnaded central section flanked by caryatids, a pierced scale pattern dome topped with a hanging hook, and a tapering base with a mellow patina and visible signs of age. Measuring 88 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 49 cm deep, this large decorative piece serves as a striking focal point for interior display in a grand hallway, living room, or study. Positioned as an architectural wall hanging or ceiling fixture, the lantern brings dramatic historic texture to traditional or eclectic interior schemes. The intricate woodwork, layered mouldings, and reflective glass panes catch the light from multiple angles, creating depth and shadow within a domestic space. Its substantial proportions make it suitable for mounting against a prominent feature wall or within a high ceilinged room, where the detailed carvings and antique gilding can be fully appreciated.

FAQs

Venetian Baroque lighting is characterised by dramatic architectural forms, hand-carved wood details, lavish gilding, and fluid scrollwork influenced by 17th and 18th-century Italian design.

These lanterns are constructed from hand-carved softwoods, such as pine or lime, coated in gesso and finished with water-applied gold leaf, featuring clear glass panels to enclose the light source.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery, surface craquelure in the gesso ground, remnants of red bole under the gold leaf, and slight irregularities inherent to hand-blown glass panels.

A large giltwood lantern functions as a focal point when suspended in an entrance hallway foyer, above a grand staircase landing, or centred within a high-ceilinged dining room.

Dust gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster, avoiding water, spray cleaners, or solvents, which can dissolve the water gilding and loosen the underlying gesso.
