Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Republic Period in China, spanning from 1912 to 1949, lapidary workshops preserved Qing dynasty carving traditions while adapting to new commercial markets. Artisans carved nephrite and jadeite stone using traditional motifs such as cranes, dragons, and auspicious characters representing longevity, wealth, and protection.

Traditional Chinese jade objects were carved primarily from nephrite stone, valued for its toughness and greasy lustre. Carvers utilized abrading slurry mixed with quartz or corundum sand alongside bow-drills, iron saws, and bamboo bits to cut, shape, and polish the hard mineral.

Authentic pieces exhibit uneven wear consistent with handling, microscopic rotary tool marks within deep cuts, and natural stone inclusions or color veining. Real nephrite possesses high density, remains cold to the touch, and cannot be scratched by a standard steel blade.

An antique jade pendant can be strung on a silk cord or suspended from a metal bale to wear as a necklace. For interior display, it can be mounted inside a custom shadow box frame or positioned on a small metal display stand within a cabinet of curiosities.

Jade should be cleaned with warm water, mild liquid soap, and a soft-bristled brush to remove dirt from detailed relief areas. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, and sudden temperature shifts, which can exacerbate natural internal fractures within the stone.
