Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A barrister bookcase is a modular piece of furniture featuring stacked, glass-fronted sections designed originally for travelling lawyers to transport law books safely. The design was popularised in the late 19th century by companies such as Globe-Wernicke, allowing units to be added vertically as libraries grew.

Authentic period pieces are traditionally crafted from solid oak, mahogany, or walnut, often featuring quarter-sawn oak with prominent medullary rays. Construction utilises sturdy dovetail joints, brass hardware, and mechanical lift-up or swinging glass doors fitted into modular, stackable tiers.

Authenticity is identified by examining the internal mechanics, manufacturer stamps or metal tags on the back or interior, hand-cut dovetailing, and period-appropriate hardware such as brass knobs and hinges. Older glass panes often exhibit subtle imperfections, ripples, or bubbles consistent with historical manufacturing techniques.

This type of bookcase fits well within a traditional study or library, but also adds textural contrast and vintage character to contemporary living rooms or home offices. It serves as a practical display case for books, ceramics, and collectables while protecting items behind dust-sealed glass panels.

Preserve the timber by keeping the piece away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and high humidity to prevent warping or cracking. Clean surfaces periodically with a soft, dry cloth and apply quality beeswax or microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the wood finish without building up residue.
