A well proportioned and very beautiful antique Georgian period mahogany bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1800-1820 period.

It has an interesting and useful design, and is of superb quality. This is of fairly small proportions, the two doors have amazing astral glazing, and open to reveal four adjustable shelves. The base has fluted columns on the front corners, with three generous drawers that have brass handles and escutcheons. This sits on nicely shaped bracket feet and has a beautifully detailed cornice.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with a gorgeous colour tone and patina. The cornice and the top section lift off, this comes in three pieces for ease of transport.

Georgian bookcases produced between 1714 and 1830 are known for symmetrical proportions, classical architectural influence, and fine timber selection. They frequently feature glazed doors with geometric astragal moulding, carved cornices, and bases fitted with drawers or panelled cupboards.

Primary construction predominantly utilised imported Cuban or Honduran mahogany, prized for its dense grain and dark reddish colour. Secondary timbers inside drawer linings typically include pine or oak, while brass hardware and hand-blown glass complete the construction.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed timber surfaces, and slight irregularities or air bubbles in the original hand-blown glass panes. Original brass handles show natural patination, and the backboards typically display hand-sawn markings.

Position the bookcase against neutral plaster walls to create a focal architectural element, pairing the warm mahogany finish with modern ceramics, minimalist art books, or framed prints. Mixing clean contemporary elements with historic timber balances traditional craftsmanship and modern interior styling.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and radiator heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer movement. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain, and clean glass panes using a soft microfibre cloth with minimal moisture.
