Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Spanish bargueno or papelera is a portable chest fitted with numerous small drawers and secret compartments, traditionally resting on a separate open framework or table stand. Originating in Spain during the Renaissance period, these cabinets were used to secure important documents, coinage, and personal valuables.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from solid walnut, oak, or ebonised hardwoods. The ornamental drawer fronts and facades were decorated with carved bone, ivory, tortoiseshell, painted glass panels, gilt brass mounts, and iron fittings.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery, uneven hand-saw marks on the back panels, oxidation around original iron or brass fittings, and signs of genuine age wear on high-touch areas such as handles and leg stretchers.

Designers position these intricate architectural cabinets as focal accent pieces against neutral walls in hallways, living rooms, or formal studies. The contrasting textures of dark timber and bone inlay allow them to anchor both traditional and modern eclectic interiors.

Keep the cabinet in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme humidity changes to prevent timber movement and inlay detachment. Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax paste sparingly to raw wood areas.
