This Victorian pier cabinet dates from 1860 in the English Country House style, formed of warm brown burr walnut veneer with glass, ormolu, and brass. The rectangular body sits on a plinth base and holds two glazed doors enclosing timber shelves, finished with ornate gilt-brass ormolu mounts on the corner stiles and small brass handles. The timber exhibits rich natural grain patterns across the top and sides. Measuring 105 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, the cabinet works well in a living room, hallway, or study as an elegant display unit for books, ceramics, or decorative objects while adding traditional character to an interior setting.

FAQs

A pier cabinet is a low, narrow decorative storage piece originally designed to stand against a pier wall between two windows in 19th-century interiors. During the Victorian era, these cabinets frequently featured glazed doors, fine wood veneers, and ornamental brass or ormolu mounts.

Cabinetmakers during this period typically utilised native timbers or mahogany for the internal carcass, applying a exterior veneer of figured burr walnut. Glazed doors were fitted with period float glass and trimmed with cast brass or gilt-bronze mounts.

Genuine mid-19th-century pieces display hand-cut joinery, original iron or brass lock mechanisms, and minor variations in veneer thickness. The original window glass often exhibits subtle waves or air bubbles typical of period manufacturing techniques.

A pier cabinet serves as a functional display platform in a hallway, dining room, or living space for ceramics, books, or framed art. Setting the rich timber tones against neutral walls creates a balanced contrast between historic cabinetmaking and contemporary decor.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year along the direction of the grain. Maintain a stable ambient humidity and position the cabinet away from direct heat sources to protect the veneer.
