Cranberry glass, also known as ruby or gold-ruby glass, is a type of pinkish-red glass created by adding gold chloride to the molten glass batch. It gained immense popularity during the Victorian era in the 19th century, particularly from the 1850s onwards, for use in tableware and decorative objects.

These items were crafted using high-purity silica mixed with precise amounts of gold to achieve the characteristic pink-red hue. Skilled artisans typically hand-blew or mould-pressed the molten glass before finishing the rims and bases by hand.

Authentic pieces from the Victorian era often display subtle irregularities such as pontil marks on the base, tiny air bubbles within the glass matrix, and slight variations in colour depth. The shade should possess a distinct rich, translucent pinkish-red tone rather than a uniform modern painted finish.

These pieces can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets to catch the light, or used functionally on dining tables for special occasions. Pairing them with neutral or metallic surfaces allows the vibrant glass colour to serve as a striking focal point.

Antique glassware should be washed gently by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes that can cause thermal shock and cracking. Never place historic glass in a dishwasher or expose it to direct, prolonged sunlight to prevent colour fading.
