A tantalus is a locking cabinet designed to hold decanters of spirits, first appearing in the Victorian era. It was named after the mythological figure Tantalus because the contents were visible behind a security bar yet out of reach without the key, preventing unauthorised access by servants or guests.

Authentic period tantalus units typically feature solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, often accented with cast brass or nickel-plated brass mountings and locking mechanisms. The accompanying decanters are usually heavy-lead cut crystal with faceted stoppers.

Authenticity is indicated by heavy construction timber, hand-cut dovetail joints where applicable, functional mechanical locking bars operated by working keys, and hand-blown or heavy-moulded cut glass decanters that fit precisely into individual wooden recesses.

Positioning the piece on a sideboard, home bar, or within a study brings a layer of historical interest and textural contrast. It pairs well with both traditional dark wood furniture and modern minimalist surfaces to create a focal point.

Maintain the wood by occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, avoiding direct sunlight and moisture. Clean the crystal decanters with warm water and mild detergent, ensuring stoppers are stored slightly ajar if moist.
