Georgian Sunderland Blue Wrythened Glass Egg Cup

18th century
Description

This is a scarce Georgian, wrythen-moulded egg cup with a turned-inward bowl rim dating from the end of the 18th century, c1780.

The egg cup is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 240 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The egg cup is in the Sunderland blue colourway and is campana-shaped and measures 5.4 cm (2.1 inches) in diameter at the upper rim. The bowl has a turned inward rim, is moulded in a wrythen pattern and ends in a short, balustroid stem and a circular foot that measures 5.1 cm (2 inches) in diameter. The egg cup is 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. There are a number of small white inclusions (probably clinker) in the metal of the bowl dating from manufacture.

It weighs 65 g. (~ 2 oz.).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian wrythened glass egg cup is an 18th-century piece of tableware crafted with a spiral or twisted fluted pattern known as wrythening, designed to hold boiled eggs upright during a meal.

These pieces were hand-blown using lead or soda-lime glass tinted with metal oxides such as cobalt, featuring hand-manipulated ribbing and pontil marks on the base.

Authentic Georgian coloured glass typically exhibits subtle hand-blown irregularities, seed bubbles within the glass matrix, a snapped or polished pontil mark beneath the foot, and subtle rim wear consistent with age.

Small antique glass vessels function as decorative accents when displayed on a sideboard top, bookshelf, or window sill where natural light highlights the translucency and colour.

Clean antique hand-blown glass by washing gently by hand in lukewarm water using a mild liquid detergent, avoiding hot water, dishwashers, and harsh abrasives that cause thermal shock or surface scratching.
