Georgian glassware encompasses items produced during the reigns of the four King Georges in Britain, spanning from 1714 to 1830. This era saw significant developments in glass chemistry, particularly with the refinement of lead crystal, which gave pieces greater clarity, weight, and brilliance.

Glassware from this period was predominantly handblown using potash or lead metal compositions. Craftsmen utilised free-blowing, mould-blowing, and pontil marking techniques, resulting in unique characteristics such as uneven thickness, surface striations, and a rough pontil scar on the base.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the metal for wear marks, tiny air bubbles, and a characteristic dark grey or blue-grey tone in lead glass. Genuine pieces typically exhibit a polished or snapped pontil mark on the underside and show age-appropriate surface wear, such as fine scratches from use.

Historic glassware can be displayed on open shelving, within traditional glass-fronted cabinets, or utilised functionally for dining and entertaining. Their tactile surfaces and subtle imperfections add texture and historical depth to contemporary tabletops and cabinet displays.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock. Items should be dried with a soft linen cloth and never placed in a dishwasher or exposed to harsh chemicals.
