Cobalt blue glass gained immense popularity during the Victorian period due to advancements in chemistry that allowed for deep, consistent coloration using cobalt oxide. It was frequently used for utilitarian and decorative tableware, including wine glasses, finger bowls, and apothecary bottles.

These pieces were typically crafted using lead glass or soda-lime glass, shaped by free-blowing or mold-blowing techniques. The distinctive blue hue was achieved by adding cobalt oxide to the molten glass batch before forming.

Authentic pieces often exhibit handmade characteristics such as pontil marks on the base, minor bubbles or striations within the glass body, and uneven wall thickness due to manual blowing techniques. The depth and saturation of the cobalt colour also differ from modern mass-produced items.

Coloured glassware can be displayed on open shelving, within glass-fronted cabinets, or used functionally on a dining table to introduce a rich jewel tone and a layer of historic texture to a room scheme.

Antique glass should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock, and dry thoroughly with a soft lint-free cloth.
