Antique Leather Domed Trunk

Description

An antique leather trunk with traditional domed top and decorative studwork. The piece retains its original ironwork handles to each side as well as metalwork to corners. To the top are the initials S J in studs. Opens to reveal wooden painted interior. A very characterful piece.

Worn with significant age related marks, creases, cracking and losses to leather and old repairs. The trunk is structurally sound. The wear is in keeping with age and its historic charm.

A domed leather trunk is a wood-framed travelling chest wrapped in leather with a distinctive curved lid. Historically used for carriage and ship travel, the arched top was designed to shed rainwater and prevent other luggage from being stacked on top of it.

These trunks were typically built with a sturdy pine or hardwood frame, covered in stretched leather, and reinforced with iron or brass studded bands along the seams. Interiors were frequently lined with plain paper, linen, or patterned textiles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-hammered studs or tacks, original brass or iron keyhole plates, natural surface wear, and craquelure on the leather. Monograms formed from stud work or painted initials were common custom features of the period.
