This Georgian period mahogany secretaire bookcase dates from circa 1780 and has a warm brown timber finish. The upper section features an arched pediment with hand-carved leaf and motif decoration, astragal glazed doors, and adjustable internal shelves. The lower chest contains a hinged top drawer that opens to reveal a fitted secretaire interior with satinwood and boxwood inlay, alongside a hide-covered writing surface with tooled edging. Brass swan-neck handles with an original mercury gilded finish adorn the five graduated drawers below, which sit on carved bracket feet. The piece measures 240 cm high, 111 cm wide, and 55 cm deep. It functions well in a traditional study, home office, or living room for display and writing use.

A Georgian secretaire bookcase is a two-part piece of 18th-century English furniture that combines an upper display cabinet or bookcase with a lower chest of drawers containing a fitted fold-down writing desk.

Craftspeople predominantly utilised solid mahogany or oak for the primary frame, incorporating flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail joints, brass hardware, and leaded or astragal glazed glass doors.

Authentic Georgian pieces typically feature hand-planed drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, original steel lock mechanisms, and characteristic astragal glazing bars surrounding hand-blown glass panes.

Position this tall cabinet in a living room, hallway, or study alongside contemporary neutral upholstery, soft accent lighting, and curated ceramics placed behind the glazed doors.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry microfiber cloth, and applying a natural beeswax polish along the wood grain annually.
