Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This George III serpentine secretaire bookcase stands as a fine example of Georgian cabinet-making, constructed from warm brown mahogany with satinwood crossbanding. The upper section comprises twin glazed doors with geometric astragal tracery, crowned by a dentil moulding along the cornice. Below this sits a serpentine-fronted chest of five graduated drawers fitted with original brass drop handles and shaped backplates, supported by ogee bracket feet. The canted corners are decorated with inlaid oval paterae and harebells, while the top drawer pulls down to reveal a fitted interior of satinwood drawers. The exterior displays a rich patina with varied grain patterns and subtle tonal shifts across the polished timber surfaces. Measuring approximately 210 cm in height, 110 cm in width, and 55 cm in depth, this bookcase makes a commanding statement in a study, library, or formal living room. It provides generous display space behind glass doors on the upper shelves and secure storage within the lower drawers, combining refined aesthetics with practical utility for everyday organisation in a period or traditional interior.

A George III secretaire bookcase is an eighteenth-century English furniture piece combining an upper cabinet with glazed doors for displaying books and a lower chest of drawers that incorporates a drop-front or pull-out writing surface.

These pieces were typically crafted using dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcasses, complemented by hand-cut brass swan-neck handles and blown glass panes for the glazed doors.

Authentic pieces feature hand-dovetailed drawer joints, uneven glass panes with natural air bubbles or imperfections, oak or pine drawer linings, and evidence of hand-planing on rear panels.

Position the piece as a focal anchor along a neutral wall, pairing it with modern low-profile seating to balance its verticality and using the upper shelves to display monochrome ceramics alongside books.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat radiators to prevent shrinkage or veneer cracking, and apply a beeswax polish annually following the direction of the grain.
