Grand Scale 19th Century English Regency Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase

19th century
For Sale by Lee Wright Antiques & Interiors Ltd (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

Grand Scale 19th Century English Regency Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase

A Grand Scale 19th Century English Regency Mahogany and Brass Inlaid Secretaire Cabinet or Bookcase.

This excellent piece of furniture has a great design of superb quality. Inspired from Thomas Sheraton's Encyclopaedia, published between 1804 and 1806, but with refinements made by the maker. At the top, there is a scrolling pediment with a central tablet, inlaid with brass stringing. There is further brass stringing on the frieze below and then a series of brass inlaid astragal glazing bars, an exceptional sign of quality, in a diamond pattern to the doors which reveal adjustable shelves on the inside. There is further inlaid brass work on the tapering pilasters to the sides of the upper and lower sections, with Egyptian mask mounts in patinated bronze. There is a secretaire drawer with lion mask handles and further brass inlay creating a panelled effect. The two cupboard doors also have brass panelling in the same manner. Concealed behind the fall (disguised as two drawers) is an arrangement of pigeon holes and small drawers. There is a tooled leather writing surface.

The lower cupboard doors conceal an arrangement of long drawers. The inside of the secretaire section is beautifully designed, the highly figured partridge wood used for the small drawer fronts.

An exceptional quality English cabinet.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency secretaire bookcase is an English piece of case furniture dating from the early 19th century that combines an upper glazed display cabinet with a lower chest containing a fold-down desk drawer and storage cupboard.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany and decorated with cuts of flame mahogany veneer, brass inlay, hand-blown glass panes, and oak or pine as secondary drawer lining woods.

Authentic Regency secretaires feature hand-dovetailed drawer joints, original brass hardware such as lion-head ring pulls, geometric astragal glazing bars, and period-appropriate drawer slides or drop-front brass side straps.

Position the piece as a focal point in a study, dining room, or wide hallway, pairing its dark mahogany tones with neutral modern paint shades, contemporary artwork, and curated book collections.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive sunlight.
