The clear glass object has a tulip-shaped body with vertical ribs, a flared scalloped rim, a small baluster knop with a supporting collar on the stem, and a spreading circular base with a polished pontil mark. There is light surface scratching to the interior of the body. The piece stands 23 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item sits on a sideboard top or acts as tableware. It lends itself to alternative uses such as holding flowers.

FAQs

In the 19th century, celery was considered a luxury dining delicacy, and specialised tall glass vessels were crafted to present fresh celery stalks vertically at formal dinner tables.

These vessels were typically produced using clear flint glass or pressed glass, featuring heavy moulded or cut vertical ribs, a knopped stem, and a sturdy circular spreading foot.

Authentic Victorian examples frequently display hand-finishing marks, a distinct weight from lead glass content, slight inclusions or air bubbles, and a ground or polished pontil base.

While originally designed for table service, footed glass vessels functions effectively as floral vases for dining tables, mantelpieces, or sideboards.

Hand wash glass vessels using warm water and mild soap, avoiding hot water temperature shocks and dishwashers which cause clouding or cracking in antique glass.
