Description

This is a Georgian, mouth-blown, plain bowl glass cream jug with an applied blue glass rim dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800.

The jug is in excellent condition for its age. This means of course that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the base.

The jug has a baluster-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the pouring rim. The bowl is plain but the pouring rim is enhanced with applied blue glass. The jug is 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) across at its widest point (pouring spout to outside of the handle) and is 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in height. The bowl sits on a conical and folded foot that measures 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter. The handle was first applied to the top of the bowl and then finished off at the bottom of the bowl with a flattened curlicue. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration. There is a collector's sticker to the base.

A pretty, period jug weighing in at 160 g. (~ 6 oz.).

Georgian glass cream jugs gained popularity during the 18th century as tea drinking became a fashionable social ritual among the British elite, necessitating specialised vessels for serving cream.

These pieces were typically hand-blown from lead glass or lime glass, often featuring applied handles, trailed rims, and folded feet shaped by skilled glassblowers using traditional iron tooling.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor surface imperfections, air bubbles trapped within the metal, and characteristic wear consistent with age and handcrafting techniques.

Antique glass vessels can be displayed on open shelving, used as small floral vases, or incorporated into cabinet displays to add historical texture and reflective transparency to modern spaces.

Antique glass should be washed gently by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and harsh abrasive sponges to protect the delicate surface.
