Description

A fabulous silver overlay cologne bottle from the end of the Art Nouveau era. This superb example has a lobed globe and shaft shaped body with extensive pierced silver overlay, featuring flowers and leaves. The silver overlay stopper is similarly pierced and patterned. Probably American in origin, this is a superior and practical collector's piece and a great gift idea. Dimensions below.

Condition :- Excellent, with no chips or cracks to the glass and no splits or dents to the silver. There is a small amount of pitting to the collar, commensurate with age and use.

FAQs

Silver overlay, also known as silver deposit, involves applying a chemical solution of pure silver directly onto a glass or ceramic blank to form decorative patterns before electroplating. This technique reached the height of its popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, as well as the Art Nouveau era.

These items are typically crafted from blown or moulded glass combined with sterling silver. A design was painted onto the glass using a resist, submerged in a silver bath for electro-deposition, and then hand-engraved or chased for fine detailing once the silver bonded to the surface.

Authentic pieces usually feature hallmarks or purity stamps such as Sterling or 925 on the silver portion. Under magnification, genuine antique silver deposit shows natural ageing, such as fine micro-scratches and correct patination, whereas modern replicas often display uniform machine-stamped finishes without genuine depth.

These reflective objects work well when displayed on mirrored vanity trays, open dressing room shelving, or styled atop a collection of hardback books on a side table to catch and refract natural light.

Clean the silver components carefully using a specialised non-abrasive silver polishing cloth, taking great care to avoid harsh liquid dips that can seep under the silver and damage the glass-to-metal bond. Hand wash the glass interior gently with lukewarm soapy water and dry immediately.
