Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-Victorian open bookcases typically feature substantial proportions, rich hardwood construction such as mahogany or walnut, and simple classical profiles. They often combine open upper shelving with enclosed lower cupboards decorated with flame veneer panels.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly utilised solid mahogany or oak for structural framework, alongside flame mahogany or walnut veneers for decorative door panels. Shelving often incorporated adjustable wooden sawtooth or brass peg support systems.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-planed backboards, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers or lower carcass frames, and original cast brass locks or escutcheons. Natural age-related oxidisation on the timber underside and interior surfaces also indicates genuine period origin.

Position a large open bookcase as a architectural focal point in a home office, dining room, or drawing room. Balance book arrangements with modern ceramic vessels, framed art, and decorative object groupings on the open shelves to soften the timber visual weight.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber hydration, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent veneer lifting.
