This Regency style mahogany breakfront open bookcase dates from 1910 and has a warm brown colour with polished timber surfaces. The rectangular top has a moulded edge above a frieze adorned with cast brass central mounts, positioned over three open sections containing adjustable shelving. Fluted pilasters separate the sections, decorated with gilt-brass Egyptian Revival female masks at the capitals and small decorative mounts at the feet. The bookcase stands on a moulded breakfront plinth base with flat rectangular panels. Metal handles sit on small frieze drawers above the side shelving compartments. Measuring 79 cm high, 138 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, the unit provides generous open storage for books and display items while maintaining a low profile. This bookcase functions well in a living room, study, or library against a wall to house collections, or in a hallway for surface display space.

Regency style bookcases are defined by classical proportions inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture. They frequently feature low profiles, symmetrical breakfront designs, fluted pilasters, and decorative brass mounts.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, valued for their deep reddish-brown grain. Accent features often incorporated brass mounts, carved pilasters, and adjustable wooden shelves.

Authentic early 19th-century Regency bookcases showcase hand-planed timber, dovetail joinery within the internal framework, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and proportional symmetry characteristic of Neo-Classical design.

A low open breakfront bookcase functions as a grounding focal point along a hallway or living room wall. The top surface provides space to arrange artwork, table lamps, or ceramics, while open shelves house curated books and decorative items.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood lustre. Avoid placing the piece in direct sunlight or adjacent to heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
