Figural cruet sets, particularly those shaped as animals and birds, gained significant popularity in Victorian times and experienced a revival during the mid-20th century. Silversmiths used these pieces to combine utility with whimsical sculpture, often depicting birds with removable heads for dispensing salt, pepper, or mustard.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver using traditional silversmithing techniques such as casting, chasing, and hand-engraving to define feathers and texture. Glass or gemstone inserts were occasionally used for eyes, whilst interior gilding was often applied to salt cellars to prevent corrosion from the contents.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks struck onto the metal, usually including a makers mark (such as Richard Comyns), a standard mark like a lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark for the assay office, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of testing.

These small decorative pieces work effectively as conversation starters on a dining table centre, within a glazed display cabinet, or on a mantelpiece. Pairing them with minimalist modern furnishings allows the detailed craftsmanship of the silver to stand out without visual clutter.

Sterling silver should be cleaned periodically using a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth to remove tarnish while preserving delicate hand-engraving. Items should be stored in low-humidity environments and handled with clean cotton gloves or washed thoroughly after use if containing corrosive condiments like salt.
