Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI style gilt bronze wall sconces, also known as French ormolu appliques, are architectural lighting fixtures that emerged in 18th-century France. Characterised by classical motifs such as urns, cherubs, acanthus leaves, and fluted columns, these fixtures were crafted to hold candles and reflect warm light across grand interiors.

Authentic period sconces were cast in bronze using the lost-wax process before undergoing precise hand-chasing to refine fine decorative detail. The gilt surface was traditionally achieved via mercury gilding (fire-gilding), bonding molten gold to the bronze substrate to produce a durable, bright gilded finish.

Original pieces display substantial physical weight, hand-finished chasing work, and cast iron or early hand-cut threaded rods on the reverse assembly. Look for signs of authentic age, such as slight patination in recessed areas and precise geometric casting lines consistent with historical metalworking techniques.

Place a symmetrical pair on either side of a large chimneypiece, architectural mirror, or contemporary artwork to create balance. They can remain un-electrified with beeswax candles for ambient period atmosphere, or professionally wired to serve as accent accent lighting against dark or textured accent walls.

Dust gilt bronze regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a fine feather duster to prevent grime accumulation. Avoid water, abrasive polishes, and chemical solvent cleaners entirely, as these can strip or scratch the thin delicate layer of gilding.
