Hot water urns gained prominence during the Georgian and Victorian eras as essential serving pieces for tea and coffee service, often positioned on sideboards during large gatherings.

These pieces are typically constructed from copper or brass base metal coated with a layer of silver via electroplating, often featuring cast or forged legs, spigots, and insulating handles made from wood or bone.

Authenticity is generally determined by manufacturer hallmarks or makers marks stamped on the base, combined with traditional construction methods such as hand-soldered joints and wear patterns appropriate to age.

An antique silver urn serves as a striking decorative focal point on a sideboard, console table, or open shelving unit, contrasting effectively against modern minimalist backdrops.

Silver plate requires gentle cleaning with a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth to remove tarnish without wearing away the thin silver layer over the base metal.
