Description

A very pretty pair of Georgian Irish silver fiddle and thread pattern serving spoons, the bowls later (Victorian) embossed and gilt washed into "berry" spoons. The handles have been finely machine engraved with a reeded background and stylised acanthus leaves and scrolls, finishing with a framed cartouche at the terminals of a family crest; a rather charming wolf passant holding a spear in its front right paw.

The hallmarks are partially obscured due to being on the stem and partially rubbed, but they are legible for Dublin 1773 and the maker's initials appear to end with an F, possibly the silversmith unidentified but with the initials W.F, a flatware worker of the early 1770s.

The measure 21.2cm (8 3/8") long and 4.5cm (1 3/4") wide. They weigh 169g / 5.4ozt.

In excellent condition with damage, dents or repairs and minimal wear to the 19th century decoration. The hallmarks, as mentioned, are partially rubbed.

A lovely set of serving spoons, perfect for desserts and fruit.

The Georgian period spans the reigns of the four British monarchs named George from 1714 to 1830, characterised in Ireland by distinctive provincial hallmarks, high-grade sterling silver, and neoclassical or rococo stylistic influences.

Berry spoons are typically crafted from sterling silver, often featuring later Victorian repousse and chased fruit motifs applied to earlier plain Georgian spoon bowls, finished with parcel-gilt highlights.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks stamped into the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a town mark such as the Dublin crowned harp, a purity standard mark, and a date letter corresponding to the assay year.

Antique silver spoons can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, mounted in shadow boxes on a dining room wall, or utilised functionally for formal table service during dinner parties.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a non-abrasive proprietary silver polish and a soft cloth, then stored in anti-tarnish cloth bags within a stable, low-humidity environment to prevent oxidation.
