Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian breakfront bookcases feature a central section that projects forward beyond the adjacent side wings, creating a stepped facade. Popular during the nineteenth century, these cabinets often incorporated decorative veneers such as amboyna, ebonised borders, and gilt-metal mounts.

Craftsmen utilised dense hardwoods finished with ebonising techniques to imitate ebony, paired with decorative veneers like amboyna or walnut. Construction typically included marquetry or parquetry inlays, glass door panels, and cast gilt-brass mounts or caryatids.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces exhibit hand-cut marquetry, period glass with subtle distortion, hand-planed timber secondary woods, and original lock mechanisms. The ebonised finish often shows gentle wear along edges, and gilt metal ornamentation is typically hand-chased brass or bronze.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall to highlight the contrast between the ebonised frame and warm wood veneers. Use the glass shelves to showcase curated ceramics, art glass, or bound volume collections, pairing the piece with contemporary seating or minimal art to balance its detailed ornamentation.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement, veneer lifting, or finish fading. Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste sparingly along the grain, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners on gilt mounts or ebonised surfaces.
