Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Victorian furniture design encompasses a revival of historical styles, often featuring elaborate ornamentation, rich dark woods such as burr walnut, and meticulous craftsmanship influenced by French rococo and Renaissance revivals.

These pieces typically utilise a solid softwood or hardwood carcass veneered with highly figured burr walnut. Artisans applied delicate marquetry using various dyed and natural woods, complemented by cast gilt bronze or brass ormulu mounts.

Authentication involves examining the hand-cut wood veneers for natural irregularities, checking for period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails, and inspecting the patination and wear consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing.

Integrating period furniture into contemporary spaces works best by positioning the piece as a focal point against neutral walls, allowing the intricate wood grain and floral marquetry to contrast cleanly with minimalist surroundings.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of microcrystalline wax helps protect the polished finish.
