This unusual Victorian open bookcase dates from 1880, created in the Arts and Crafts style from warm brown elm. The large piece stands 210 cm high, 205 cm wide, and 28 cm deep, providing extensive open shelving for a gentleman's library or study. The elm displays a rich honey-brown tone with natural figuring, complemented by contrasting dark and light wooden inlay along the top edge, featuring a Greek key pattern executed in ebony and satinwood. Upright pilasters frame the three vertical sections, topped with carved circular roundels. Each section contains four adjustable shelves, resting on an enclosed plinth base with matching decorative inlay. The structural design includes alterations consistent with period adaptation. Practical for organizing extensive book collections, this substantial bookcase functions effectively in a home library, study, or living room. The open shelving allows for easy access to volumes while displaying varied book bindings against the warm wood interior. The sturdy plinth base supports the heavy timber frame securely on the floor. The combination of simple vertical lines and subtle contrasting geometric borders suits period interiors or traditional spaces requiring functional storage with refined decorative details.

Originating in the late nineteenth century, Arts and Crafts furniture emphasises traditional craftsmanship, visible construction techniques, and honest use of natural timber grain rather than mass-produced ornament.

Elm is known for its distinctive interlocking grain and durability, making it an ideal choice for substantial furniture items such as bookcases, chairs, and tables.

Authentic pieces from this period typically feature hand-cut joinery, solid timber construction, period-appropriate inlays or geometric borders, and genuine age-related patination on unexposed surfaces.

Position the bookcase as a focal architectural feature along a neutral accent wall, styling shelves with a mixture of leather-bound books, ceramic vessels, and framed art to balance visual weight.

Keep the timber clean by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or damp environments.
