This petite bronze jardiniere from the French Empire period originates from circa 1900 and exhibits a gold and clear colour palette composed of gilt bronze and cut glass materials. The oval vessel incorporates a segmented, clear cut glass bowl with a scalloped top edge, housed within an intricately cast gilded bronze mount. The decorative mount displays relief scenes of a winged cherub riding a chariot pulled by lions, flanked by pairs of French winged sphinxes. Squat eagle feet support the base at each end beneath prominent scrolled handles. This piece stands 9 cm high, 29 cm wide, and 13.5 cm deep. Positioned on a dining table center, the jardiniere holds floral arrangements or functions as a decorative tabletop display piece within a home today. The design reflects a French chateau aesthetic, bringing classical motifs and metallic warmth to interior spaces. The structure integrates elaborate hardware and hardware detailing including detailed scrollwork and sculptural supports visible throughout the frame. The combination of reflective glass and ornate gilded metal creates a balanced composition suitable for traditional and formal interior settings.

A gilt bronze cut glass jardiniere is an ornate decorative vessel developed during the 18th and 19th centuries, designed to hold floral displays or function as a formal table centrepiece. It combines a cast bronze frame finished with mercury gilding (ormolu) and a fitted glass liner featuring geometric hand-cut patterns.

These decorative items typically feature a heavy cast bronze alloy frame plated with gold (ormolu) and a drop-in liner made of blown lead crystal or thick cut glass. The bronze components are often detailed using chasing tools before gilding to enhance depth and relief motifs.

Authentic pieces feature heavy, hand-chased metal mounts with slight variation in gilding wear, particularly on raised points. The glass liners often display irregular hand-cut faceting, lead crystal weight, and natural wear marks where the glass rests against the metal frame.

Position the jardiniere as a central focal point on a formal dining table, marble-topped sideboard, or entry console table. It can be displayed empty to showcase the metalwork motifs or filled with dried florals or potted greenery.

Dust the metal structure regularly with a soft, dry brush, avoiding liquid chemicals or brass polishes that can wear away gilding. The glass liner should be washed separately using warm water and mild soap, then dried thoroughly before returning it to the mount.
