Imari porcelain refers to Japanese ceramic wares produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari. Originating in the seventeenth century, these pieces are recognised for their distinct colour scheme combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron red and gold decoration.

Traditional Imari pieces are crafted from hard-paste porcelain kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures. Cobalt blue motifs are applied under the clear glaze before the initial firing, followed by hand-painted iron-red enamels and gilt highlights applied over the glaze for subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentic Imari porcelain typically features subtle irregularities in hand-painted detailing, asymmetrical compositions, and small spur marks on the base from kiln supports. Older examples often exhibit a slight bluish tint to the clear glaze and visible wear to the overglaze enamel.
