An opaque twist firing glass is a style of drinking vessel produced primarily in England during the 18th century, particularly between 1750 and 1780. They feature a distinctive heavy, compacted foot designed to produce a sharp ringing sound, or fire, when slammed onto a wooden table during toasts.

These pieces are made from lead glass, characterised by a high density and clarity. The signature stem is created using enamel rods twisted within the molten glass structure, a technique perfected by English and continental glassmakers in the mid-Georgian era.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-specific manufacturing characteristics such as a rough snapped pontil mark on the underside of the base, heavy weight due to lead content, and subtle irregularities in the glass matrix and twist formation typical of hand-blown production.

Displaying historical glassware within modern settings works best when grouped together in illuminated cabinets, on open shelving, or styled as a single focal object on a mantelpiece to highlight its craftsmanship and historical texture.

Antique glass should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild, non-abrasive soap. Avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock, and never place historical glassware in a dishwasher.
