Marriage coffers, often referred to as dowry chests, were traditional pieces of furniture given to a bride upon marriage to store her linens, textiles, and valuables, frequently commissioned specifically for the occasion with personalised motifs.

These pieces were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, pine, or fruitwood, employing traditional joinery methods like dovetail or mortise and tenon joints, often finished with hand-mixed pigments and iron hardware.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patination of the wood, tool marks left by hand-working, hand- forged iron hinges and locks, and the ageing characteristics of the original paint layers.

Such pieces function effectively as focal points in living spaces or hallways, offering practical storage while introducing historical character and texture into contemporary minimalist or eclectic schemes.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent paint fading, and cleaning only with a dry or very slightly damp lint-free cloth without chemical polishes.
