FAQs

The roemer is a traditional Germanic drinking vessel that evolved during the sixteenth century, initially used for consuming Rhine wine, and became popular across Northern Europe for its distinctive spherical bowl and layered foot.

These glasses were typically mouth-blown using potash-lime glass, often tinted green or blue due to natural impurities in the raw materials, and featured a hollow stem applied with raspberry prunts above a ribbed conical foot.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor surface irregularities from hand-blowing, natural wear scratches under the foot, and wheel-engraved detailing characteristic of period craftsmanship.

Displaying the piece within a glass-fronted cabinet or on an open shelving unit allows natural light to highlight the coloured glass and intricate engraving while keeping it safe from daily handling.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using warm water and mild detergent without soaking, avoiding harsh abrasive materials or modern dishwashers to protect the delicate surface and historical patina.
