Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Antique oak bookcases typically date from the 18th to the early 20th century, emerging from periods valuing sturdy domestic utility and scholarly pursuits like the Victorian and Edwardian eras. They reflect traditional cabinet-making techniques focused on durability, functional storage, and the prominent display of literature.

These units are constructed primarily from solid European or American oak, often featuring visible medullary rays and grain patterns. Traditional construction relies on mortise and tenon joints, dovetail joinery for drawers, and solid timber panels rather than modern veneers.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage cracks, and consistent patination from age and use. Hardware, fixings, and tool marks on the interior timber also provide crucial clues to the period of manufacture.

Integrating an antique wooden bookcase into a contemporary space involves balancing the heavy timber tones with neutral walls, modern art, and curated collections of books arranged by height and colour. It provides warmth and texture, acting as a grounding focal point in living rooms or studies.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help nourish the finish.
