Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A secretaire bookcase is a tall piece of case furniture that combines a glazed upper display cabinet for books with a drop-front or pull-out writing desk and lower cupboard storage. Popularised during the 18th century, satinwood versions feature fine grain figures and decorative marquetry favoured in Neoclassical design.

Traditional construction incorporates West Indian or East Indian satinwood veneers over solid pine or oak carcases, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass hardware, and intricate marquetry inlays made from contrasting woods such as rosewood, boxwood, and tulipwood.

Look for hand-finished astragal glazing bars on the upper glass doors, slight irregular shrinkage lines consistent with aged wood veneers, original brass drop handles, and hand-cut joinery inside the secretaire desk fitted drawers.

Position the cabinet as a focal architectural feature against a neutral or rich wall backdrop in a hallway, library, or living room, pairing its detailed wood tones with modern art or clean-lined minimalist decor to create visual contrast.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Clean surfaces gently with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year.
