Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large nineteenth-century open bookcase is created in the Napoleon III style from ebonised wood with brass mounts and gilt foliage decoration throughout. The black piece stands at 155 cm high, 175 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, incorporating a quarter gallery top with a moulded edge above a frieze set with an ornate gilt egg and floral scrolling design. Three adjustable shelves sit within the structure, flanked by fluted columns featuring scrolling foliated mounts, all resting upon a plinth base. Suitable for use in a gentleman's library, study, or living room, the bookcase provides substantial open display space for books or decorative objects. The dark timber surface integrates with formal interiors, while the metallic mounts add contrast and classical detail to the front elevation. The arrangement of shelves and the architectural columns allow the furniture to function as a storage and display focal point in a domestic interior.

FAQs

Ebonised furniture gained widespread popularity during the 19th century, particularly within the Empire, Napoleon III, and late Victorian eras, as craftsmen sought to replicate imported Asian ebony wood using stained native hardwoods paired with gilt or brass fittings.

These pieces generally utilise dense hardwoods such as oak, fruitwood, or beech that have been stained black or charcoal, adorned with cast or pressed brass mouldings, mounts, and protective shelf edge trims.

Authentic pieces usually display natural wear to the black finish where underlying wood grain shows through, feature hand-cut joinery, and show age-appropriate oxidisation on the brass mounts rather than uniform modern plating.

An ebonised open bookcase offers stark visual contrast against pale modern walls, functioning well as a focal point in living rooms or home offices when styled with bound books, ceramics, and metallic decorative objects.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and polish the ebonised wood with a high-quality beeswax; avoid harsh chemical cleaners on brass mounts to protect both the metal patina and the surrounding finish.
