Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Early 20th-century silver plating typically involved electroplating a base metal, such as copper or nickel silver, with a layer of pure silver. This technique made luxury tableware more accessible while maintaining the polished appearance of solid sterling silver.

These vessels were usually constructed from a durable base metal core coated in silver via electroplating. Handles were frequently fashioned from insulating materials such as ebonised wood or Bakelite to prevent heat transfer during pouring.

Authenticity is typically verified through maker marks, manufacturer hallmarks, and stamps indicating the plating technique stamped onto the base or rim. Gradual wear revealing the base metal underneath in high-friction areas also indicates genuine age.

This piece can be displayed on a sideboard, bar cart, or open shelving to introduce metallic reflection and historical character to a contemporary room. It functions effectively as a standalone decorative object or as part of a curated tablescape.

Preservation requires regular, gentle cleaning with a specialist non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to prevent the removal of the thin silver layer. Storing the item in a dry environment away from direct sunlight helps minimise tarnishing.
