Description

A beautiful and very well made antique burr walnut cascading open bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1900-1920 period.

It is of superb quality and has a gorgeous design, it is also a very useful size. The sides and top are beautifully shaped, this has two useful drawers in the lower section, and it sits on cabriole legs.

We have had this revived and re-polished, it is in very good condition for its age, with just some minor wear remaining beneath the polish. There has been a very slight bit of movement on the sides, this is not noticeable at all unless viewed from the back, it is seen in the close up images.

Width – 26 inches , 66 cm

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Burr walnut refers to the distinctively figured grain derived from the wart-like growths on walnut trees, prized for its complex patterns and luxurious appearance in cabinetmaking.

These pieces typically feature solid timber frames with decorative burr walnut veneers applied to visible surfaces, often utilizing traditional joinery such as dovetails for drawers and mortise-and-tenon joints.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-cut dovetailing, timber shrinkage consistent with age, natural beeswax patination, and the characteristic irregularity of hand-applied veneer.

It serves as a sophisticated focal point in studies or living spaces, pairing effectively with neutral walls to highlight the rich figuring of the wood grain.

Maintain the wood by dusting with a dry cloth, applying occasional high-quality beeswax, and avoiding placement near direct heat sources or strong sunlight to prevent veneer cracking.
