A trencher salt is a small, heavy-based table salt container used during the 17th and 18th centuries, typically placed directly beside the dining plate or trencher.

These pieces were traditionally manufactured from sterling silver, though early examples can also be found in pewter, brass, and occasionally ceramics.

Authentic pieces generally feature period hallmarks, appropriate weight, hand-raised construction marks, and natural oxidisation consistent with age.

Such small decorative items work effectively when displayed on a sideboard top or bookcase, adding metallic contrast and historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires minimal cleaning with a non-abrasive silver cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips to protect any original hallmarks and patination.
