FAQs

Early spice cupboards date primarily from the 17th and 18th centuries, designed in domestic settings to securely store valuable and exotic spices imported from trade routes, which were costly commodities at the time.

These cupboards were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or fruitwoods, often featuring pegged joinery, hand-cut dovetails, and decorative elements like marquetry or inlaid panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct construction methods, such as hand-sawn timber marks, old or original iron hinges and locks, natural timber shrinkage, and historic patination accumulated over centuries.

Mounting the cupboard on a plain, neutral wall allows the historic wood grain and tactile surface to act as a focal point, creating a deliberate contrast between modern minimalism and historical texture.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber drying and fading, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the historic surface finish.
