Old Sheffield Plate Beer Jug.

18th century
Description

Lovely Old Sheffield Plate beer/cider Jug; of plain form with reeded bands to the body. The hinged lid is domed with a half-fluted pattern and has a fine shell thumbpiece.

We also have a later silver identical jug, slightly larger; it's details can be found on Selling Antiques (SA1137318) or on our website, George James Antiques (28/2227,) both jugs bear the same crest and were purchased by us from the same family. It would seem that the Old Sheffield jug was loved so much that a later generation commissioned a silver copy to be made some 60 years later.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to an eighteenth-century manufacturing technique where a thin layer of sterling silver is fused to a thicker block of copper before being rolled into sheets and crafted into hollowware.

Georgian silver plated jugs were constructed from fused silver and copper sheets, often incorporating die-struck mounts, reeded borders, and heat insulators made of ivory or bone within the handles.

Authentic pieces often exhibit silvered edges or turned rims designed to hide the copper core, signs of hand hammering, and light bleed-through where the underlying copper shows through heavy wear.

An antique silver jug can be styled on a sideboard or open shelving, used as a sculptural tabletop accent, or repurposed to hold floral arrangements in a dining or living area.

Clean gently using a mild silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive polishes that might wear down the silver layer to the copper beneath.
