Superb Large Old Sheffield Plated Boxed Communion Set C1840

19th century
For Sale by Graham Pickett
Description

An expectional and important set of Old Sheffield Plated Communion ware, comprising of two large statuesque flagons, six ornate plates and six goblets with gilded interiors within a custom made silver chest. All are marked for the Open Hand mark of maker Padley Parkin & Co and dating to c1840. The flagons are faintly seamed under the handles.

All pieces are engraved for the commemoration of the fire at Great George Street Chapel in Liverpool in 1840 on inlaid silver cartouches to the plates and flagons. An historically interesting piece.

The box has a beautiful brass plaque to the lid for Great George Street Chapel and has a solid working lock with a key. With fine brass handles to the sides.

The condition is very good overall with no splits and very little wear to the plating. One plate has a small ding to its bowl and there is one small dent to the handle on one of the flagons. One flagon has had a strengthening screw inserted to hold the finial - see photo. The flagons have very clean interiors. A couple of very small instances of copper bleed to a couple of the pieces but these are hardly noticeable. One flagon has a slight wobble, but overall the set is in wonderful condition.

The box interior is a bit worn to the linings but all pieces are supplied with individual felt bags (not pictured). Slight wear around the lock.

Goblet - Height approx 23.5cm. Diameter at rim approx 11.5cm.

Platter - Diameter approx 24.5cm.

Flagon - Height approx 45cm. Span approx 25cm. Base diameter approx 18cm.

Box - Measures approx 67cm x 48cm. Height approx 29cm.

This set needs to be sent by a specialist courier service, so please ask for details before your purchase.

Old Sheffield Plate was invented in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover and involved fusing a layer of silver onto a copper ingot before rolling it into sheets. During the nineteenth century, religious institutions frequently commissioned communion sets in Sheffield plate as an alternative to solid sterling silver.

Ecclesiastical sets from this era were primarily constructed using sterling silver or silver fused onto copper (Old Sheffield Plate). The interior of chalices was often lined with a thin layer of gold gilding to prevent corrosion from wine acids.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate often exhibits areas of bleeding where the underlying copper shows through worn silver. Additionally, pieces display bare copper edges covered with drawn silver wire, soldered seams, and period-appropriate maker marks or stampings.

An antique communion set can be displayed inside a glazed cabinet or placed on a mahogany sideboard within a traditional or dark academia interior layout to highlight its historical metalwork.

Clean Sheffield plate gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish formulated specifically for historic metals. Avoid excessive buffing to prevent wearing down the thin fused silver layer and expose the underlying copper metal.
