Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, copper lanterns were widely produced across Britain for street lighting, public buildings, and grand private estates. Originally designed to house oil or gas burners, these fixtures were crafted to withstand outdoor elements prior to the introduction of municipal electric grid systems.

Victorian lanterns were primarily constructed from sheet copper, brass, or cast iron frame enclosures fitted with blown glass panes. Copper was favoured for outdoor fixtures due to its structural durability and natural resistance to corrosion over time.

Authentic period lanterns display hand-soldered joints, hand-cut glass retention clips, and functional ventilation chimneys at the apex. Original examples often exhibit layers of historical paint finish over oxidised copper, alongside mounting marks from earlier gas or oil mechanisms.

Antique lanterns can be re-wired for modern electrical safety standards and suspended in entryways, stairwells, or kitchen islands. Alternatively, they can be displayed unlit on console tables or mantelpieces as decorative architectural accents.

Preservation requires gentle dusting with a soft dry brush to maintain existing paintwork and patina. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners or harsh scrubbing, which can strip historic surface finishes and destabilise loose paint layers.
