Glass dumps were solid decorative objects traditionally fashioned by glassmakers at the end of a shift using leftover molten glass. Often incorporating trapped air bubbles or embedded floral motifs, these substantial items served functionally as desk weights.

These pieces were crafted from heavy-gauge soda-lime or lead glass, frequently utilising coloured bottle glass as a base material. Master artisans manipulated the molten mass using tools to incorporate internal metal foils, air bubbles, or layered floral arrangements known as sulphurides or cane work.

Authentic pieces typically feature a polished pontil mark on the base where the glassblowers rod was snapped off. They display characteristic weight, subtle internal impurities or bubbles consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing techniques, and often exhibit a deep, rich colour saturation.

This type of object functions effectively as a tactile focal point on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or executive desk. The reflective qualities of the glass catch natural light, making it suitable for placement near windows or on open shelving.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth and warm water with mild dish soap if necessary. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive scrubbers, and exposing the glass to sudden, extreme temperature fluctuations.
