A George III silver caster, often referred to as a sugar dredger or castor, is a perforated container utilised during the 18th century for sprinkling sugar, salt, or spices onto food at the dining table.

These pieces were typically hand-crafted from sterling silver using raising and spinning techniques, featuring pierced decorative lids secured by bayonet fittings or threaded collars, often complemented by hand-engraved details.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks stamped on the base and lid, which typically include makers marks, city assay marks such as the three castles for Newcastle, and date letters corresponding to the Georgian period.

An antique silver caster can be displayed prominently on a sideboard, dining table centre, or mantelpiece to introduce metallic texture, historical depth, and reflective elegance into a traditional or transitional room design.

Antique silver should be cleaned infrequently using a non-abrasive, high-quality silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh dips, and stored in a low-humidity environment to prevent excessive tarnish.
