George V Deco Silver Vesta Case Birmingham 1920

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A George V Deco era silver vesta case with clear hallmarks for Birmingham 1920 and makers mark for Samuel M Levi. This vesta is in excellent condition. It’s design reflects the change in taste from the elaborate foliage designs favoured by the Victorians to the more streamlined look favoured in the Edwardian and George V 1920/30s eras. The vesta is made of plain smooth silver with alternating vertical engraved lines, all round. It has a vacant round shield for initials, which it seems we’re never added. A good looking tactile item.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vesta case, also known as a match safe, is a small portable container designed in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to hold friction matches, named after the Roman goddess of the hearth, Vesta.

Art Deco vesta cases were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, nickel, or brass, often featuring engine-turned geometric patterns, enamel detailing, and a serrated striking surface along the base.

Authentic British pieces bear official hallmarks, including a makers mark, town mark such as the Birmingham anchor, fineness mark like the lion passant for sterling silver, and a date letter corresponding to the 1920s.

These compact silver items can be styled on an office desk tray, placed inside a glass shadow box, or arranged alongside other antique silver pocket accessories on a bookshelf.

Gently polish the silver with a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialised silver cream, avoiding harsh abrasive cleaners that could wear down delicate engine-turned engravings or hallmarked surfaces.
