Antique Uzbek suzani, silk on a red cotton ground.

Circa 1900/20.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding or other special occasion. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt or family home. They are usually embroidered in silk on on a cotton, silk, linen or wool ground. The suzani is often backed with a fine cotton lining to give it strength and body. Suzani can be used in the modern home as wall hangings, bed covers or decorative throws.

This example is of prayer format with silk embroidery on a plain red cotton field. It was probably woven in Southern Uzbekistan by ladies of Tajik origin. The suzani would have been used as a bed cover or wall hanging.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A suzani is a hand-embroidered textile traditionally created in Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries as part of a brides dowry. Featuring intricate floral, solar, or architectural motifs, these panels were historically crafted using silk threads on cotton or silk ground fabrics.

Suzanis are typically worked in silk thread onto cotton or linen foundations using traditional needlework stitches such as chain stitch (ilmok) and couching (basma). The underlying base cloth is often constructed from narrow loom-woven panels stitched together prior to or following embroidery.

Authentic historic pieces display hand-spun base fabrics, natural vegetable dyes that produce subtle colour variation, and irregularities consistent with hand embroidery. The presence of visible seam lines running through the embroidery where separate cloth strips were joined is another signature marker of traditional craftsmanship.

An embroidered suzani can be displayed as a framed or mounted wall hanging above a bed, sideboard, or sofa to add texture and historical interest. Alternatively, it can be draped over upholstered furniture or folded across the foot of a bed as a decorative accent.

Dry cleaning and harsh chemical detergents must be avoided, as historic dyes may bleed and delicate silk fibres can degrade. Keep the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and consult a professional textile conservator for specialised conservation washing or archival mounting.
