Antique Uzbek 'Nim' Suzani, Possibly Lakai Work, Circa 1900/20.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 4ft 7in x 3ft 7in (140 x 110cm).

Antique Uzbek 'nim' suzani, silk on a soft light brown cotton ground.

Circa 1900/20.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example is of a small size known as 'nim' suzani, which means half embroidered; the silk embroidery is on a soft light brown cotton field. It was probably woven in Southern Eastern Uzbekistan, near the Tajik boarder, possibly Lakai work. The suzani would have been used as a small cover or wall hanging, they were also used on special occasions to cover the ground for the serving of food, like a table cloth.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs, the backing is cotton with a floral design.

The suzani is ready for display.

Ref: T-0318.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Suzani is a hand-embroidered textile panel originating from Central Asia, traditionally crafted by brides and their families as part of a marriage dowry. The word derives from the Persian word for needle, referencing the needlework techniques used to create intricate floral, solar, and tribal patterns.

Traditional Suzanis were embroidered on narrow strips of handwoven cotton or silk fabric, which were stitched together before or after embroidery. The decorative motifs were executed using silk threads in tambouring, chain stitch, or basma couching stitches.

Authentic pieces feature narrow structural panels sewn together, natural dye colour variations across threads, and hand-drawn outline marks beneath the stitching. Irregularities in execution and distinct regional motifs, such as Lakai hooked scrolls or Tashkent sun-discs, further indicate genuine handcrafting.

An embroidered Suzani works effectively mounted as framed wall art or hung directly from a brass rod above a bed or sideboard. It can also be draped over sofa backs or dining tables to add pattern, texture, and historical narrative to contemporary rooms.

Keep antique textiles away from direct sunlight to prevent silk fibre degradation and fading of dyes. Cleaning should be limited to gentle air dusting or professional conservation, avoiding wet washing or household chemical treatments.
