Exceptional Silk Embroidered Mirror Cover, Central Asia, Circa 1880, 62cm X 57cm

19th century
Description

Worked by the talented embroiderers of Kyrgyzstan, this is a beautiful piece from a rare group of 19th century Central Asian weavings. Embroidered in silk chainstitch on a black velvet background. The embroidery has been worked in several striking colours. The design is beautifully composed with graphic cosmic imagery. The motifs appear to be floating above a dark cosmos. The composition conveys energy and life, and is really beautifully executed. Cherished through the generations, this little masterpiece has survived in excellent condition. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically produced in Central Asia, these textiles were crafted to cover and protect mirror glass when not in use and formed part of traditional bridal dowries. They feature dense silk embroidery on woven backings, often decorated with symbolic geometric or floral iconography.

Artisans typically utilised hand-spun silk threads dyed with natural pigments for the embroidery, worked onto cotton, silk, or wool bases. Additional ornamentation often included glass beads, metallic threads, or fabric tassels along the outer borders.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit hand-stitched silk thread work, slight irregularities in stitch tension, and subtle dye colour variations. The reverse side often reveals hand-knotted thread ends and structural backing fabrics typical of regional loom production.

Textile art of this nature is frequently mounted in custom box frames to protect the delicate fibres while displaying the vibrant pattern. It can be displayed on neutral walls to provide graphic contrast and textural warmth within contemporary room settings.

Antique silk embroideries require protection from direct sunlight, high humidity, and pest exposure. Cleaning should be restricted to gentle surface vacuuming through a protective screen or handled directly by a professional textile conservator.
