Antique Uzbek Suzani of Small Size, Silk on Cotton, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 5ft 1in x 4ft 2in (155 x 126cm).

Antique Uzbek suzani, silk on a dusky red cotton ground.

Circa 1900.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example is of a small size with silk 'basma' couching stitch embroidery on a plain dusky red cotton field. It was probably woven in Southern Uzbekistan, Shahrisabz region. The suzani would have been used as a small cover or wall hanging, they were also used on special occasions to cover the ground for the serving of food, like a table cloth.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs. The suzani retains the original linen backing.

The suzani is ready for display.

Ref: T-0015.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A suzani is a hand-embroidered tribal textile traditionally created in Central Asian countries, particularly Uzbekistan, to serve as a dowry piece for weddings.

Traditional suzanis are stitched using silk embroidery threads on a handwoven cotton or linen ground fabric, often utilizing chain stitch and couching techniques.

Authentic pieces feature narrow strips of foundation cloth stitched together, natural dye variations in the silk threads, and minor irregularities indicative of hand needlework.

A small suzani can be mounted in a frame as focal wall art, draped over decorative furniture, or displayed over the back of a sofa to introduce color and pattern.

Keep the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent silk fading, avoid chemical cleaners, and consult a professional textile conservator for surface dusting or mounting.
